Massie Heritage Center is Savannah’s museum for History and Architecture. Owned and operate by the Savannah-Chatham County Public School System, Massie is Savannah’s oldest continuously operating educational facility, serving the needs of students and learners of all ages. Operated as a public school from 1856 – 1974, the old classrooms now hold exhibitions that examine Savannah’s history though its urban plan, maritime industry, historic preservation movement, architecture, and the indigenous and pre-historic peoples of the region. Massie also interprets the history of the school and the school district through the recreation of the original classroom and principal’s office.
