This online exhibition documents the history of Savannah-Chatham schools that were named after individuals; past and present. The Savannah-Chatham Public School System's first "namesaked" school was Massie School, named for the building's funder, Peter Massie.

Historically, schools were named after the community or street where they were located. As the school district grew, newly built schools would be named after significant individuals (often with some tie to the area). In the late 19th century, there was an uptick in naming schools after prominent leaders in the school district, impactful educators, or people in the community who made significant contributions to education. In the mid-20th Century, schools continued to be named after local leaders in education but prominently recognized individuals in the African-American community. 

The practice continues into the 21st Century with older schools being renamed in honor or remembrance after a person's passing.
